Tenney Family Gathers for Funeral of Family Patriarch

I was 13 years old when Grandpa Tenney died. I did not get to travel from Idaho to Arizona for the funeral but stayed home with four of my siblings while my parents and older brother and sister and baby sister got to go. I guess somebody had to stay home to take care of the animals and farm!

I have identified every person who attended the funeral in the family photograph. Along with us 5 Goodman kids missing the funeral, Jerry and Audrey and Deborah Lane and his brother, Joe, Donna, Julianna and Martha Lane were not in the picture. This probably is the last picture taken with so many present.

Keven is my Tenney 1st Cousin once-removed. Suzy and Dene are my Tenney 1st Cousins. April is my sister. We all had fun visiting and catching up on the latest in our lives.

Oldest Tenney Cousin passes away!

News arrived today of the passing of our oldest Tenney 1st Cousin, Jerry Benjamin Lane. Son of Orson Pratt & Naydene Tenney Lane on Saturday, March 27, 2010 in Phoenix, Arizona. Complications from multiple bees stings. Jerry is the proud owner of the rifle belonging to our Great-grandfather, William Green Wear.

The youngest child and oldest grandchild of Nathan Orson & Myrtle Mary Wear Tenney pose for a photograph with the rifle.

Jerry loved to share the story of finding this rifle and enjoyed showing it to family and friends.

Hi Guys,
I will attempt to tell how I came to have Grandpa Ware's [sic] (Wear) 30-30 carbine.
In 1944 I was 16 years old, had a 30-30 but no ammo for it. As you couldn't buy any due to WW II. Momma came home 1 day and told Dad and I she "found 2 boxes of 30-30 ammo today". Dad ask if she bought it. She said, "No because you have to buy the gun too". Dad gave me $30.00 to go buy it and the ammo (can you see a 16 year old buying a gun and ammo today?) When I got home, Dad ask, "How good a gun did you get?" I told him I didn't even look at the gun and handed it to him. It has the /A\ brand carved in the forearm.

Dad wondered if that was Mr. Ware's [sic] (Wear) old gun (he always called him Mr. Ware). Dad said Uncle Jim Crawford would be out in a day or 2 and we would ask him. When Uncle Jim came, Dad asked him to look at the gun we bought. The 1st thing Uncle Jim said before he even had it in his hands was, "I'll be damned that is Mr Ware's [sic} (Wear) old gun. He said he sold it in Silver City, New Mexico, that he had it standing up at the end of the wagon spring seat is what wore the grove in the stock. Grandpa Ware]Sic] (Wear) had carved his /A\ brand in the forearm.

I bought it at Lewis 2nd hand store in Prescott, Arizona. I have had it 52 years, killed lot of game with it, and treasure it.

4 Patriarchal Blessings to Nathan Orson Tenney

Sometime before 1943 Grandpa Nathan Orson Tenney wrote an article entitled: "Analysis of my Patriarchal Blessings given by Patriarch Hrum G Smith, Samuel Claridge and John F. Nash". Nathan actually had four official Patriarchal Blessings in his lifetime. An unusual feat compared to our day.

The first blessing was given in 1908 in Thatcher, Arizona by Samuel Claridge. The second blessing came in 1916 during the time the family had traveled by railroad to Salt Lake City for the Sealing of the family in the Salt Lake Temple. That blessing was given by the Patriarch to the Church, Hyrum G. Smith. The third blessing came in 1931 in Mesa, Arizona by John F. Nash. The last blessing was given in 1943 in Mesa, Arizona by Franklin Thomas Pomeroy. This last blessing is not referenced in the article written.

"I am of the lineage of Ephraim, numbered among the sons of Zion, born an heir thru my faithfulness to the blessings, gifts and privileges promised unto the sons of Israel in this generation thru the New and Everlasting Covenant. I am the child of the covenant and am highly favored in receiving my body thru parents who have received their blessing in the House of the Lord.

My mission in life.....I am to be made useful in assisting to bring about the Lords purposes in this great dispensation, I will be called upon to take an active part in many of my labors in helping to bring about the Zion of our God upon the earth. I will preach the gospel to the Jew and Gentiles. I am to officiate in many of the sacred ordinances of the gospel and hold places of trust, both in civil and religious positions. I am to grasp every opportunity to teach the principles of righteousness to those whom I meet in my daily labors for there are many honest souls around us who are seeking for the truth. I am in later years to be called to labor in the House of the Lord for the salvation of my kindred who have passed away. I am to remember the needy and destitute and give to them of my fullness which the Lord will multiply upon my head.

My posterity.....I was promised in my first blessing given by Patriarch Claridge (He gave it to me June 22, 1908) that I should be blessed with sons and daughters that would be an ornament in society.

Patriarch Smith on June 13, 1916 told me in a blessing that I should be blessed with a name and posterity which will be honorable in the land.

In a Blessing given me by Patriarch Nash, August 20, 1931, I was told that I have a family that is choice in the sight of the Lord, that they are faithful and obedient to the requirements the Lord has made of them. And as I teach them the truth pertaining to salvation they will grow in grace and be an honor and comfort to me while I live upon the earth. They come of an ancestry who have done much in causing the Gospel to be spread upon the earth.

Blessings promised in the future.....I will see the power of God made manifest while on my mission in many ways. I will have the privilege of leading many Lamanites into the waters of baptism. I will see the power of the three Nephites made manifest among that people in my day. I will assist in locating them in different places and give them the true order of civilization. I will see the power of God resting upon them and their countenance become white and filled with the spirit of love of the gospel. I will lead them in the defense of Zion and no power shall stay my progress."

The fulfillment of Patriarchal Blessings are not confined to this life. The veil is thin between our pre-earth life and our life after the death of our mortal bodies. The temple sealing of Nathan Orson Tenney and Myrtle Mary Wear Tenney was not canceled in life. All of their 10 children were either sealed with them in the Salt Lake Temple in 1916 or "born in the covenant" after 1916. All those children have the fullness of that covenant and ordinance intact!

Grandma Myrtle Mary Wear Tenney received three blessings in her lifetime. The first was in Salt Lake City in 1916 at the time of the family's sealing in the Salt Lake Temple. That blessings was given by the Patriarch to the Church, Hyrum G. Smith. Her second blessings was given in Willcox, Arizona dated August 8, 1920. The name of the person giving the blessing is not identified. Myrtle's last blessings was given in 1931 in Mesa, Arizona by Patriarch John F. Nash.

"My Birthright" an essay by Nathan Orson Tenney

Sometime in the late 1930's or early 1940's my grandfather, Nathan Orson Tenney, wrote a short essay entitled, "My Birthright". It was from a Genealogy class assignment from his daughter, Opal Tenney Goodman, who requested his contribution. His writing shows a deep eternal and spiritual insights of latter-day gospel doctrine possessed by a well-read scriptorium. Such was my Grandpa Tenney.

"My Birthright"

My birthright dates back to a time which has no beginning. In my first estate I was a God in embryo. From that time until now I have advanced as a God in embryo step by step which privileged me first to be born into a spirit in my Heavenly Father's kingdom. And there I remained in the scheme of life until I had gained knowledge and experience which advanced me to a standard that entitled me to an earthly tabernacle.

At which time my spirit was born into this body which I am now in possession of prior to this life which was designated as my first estate. I am now living in my second estate, which gives me great privileges according to my worthiness. I am a child of the covenant and highly favored in receiving my body through parents who have received their blessings in the house of the Lord.

A am of the lineage of Ephraim numbered among the sons of Zion, born an heir through my faithfulness to the blessings, gifts and privileges, promises unto the sons of Israel in this generation through the new and everlasting covenant.

Under my progress of Godhood I have advanced until I have acquired the Holy Priesthood, which makes me a great God in my sphere of life or (Embryonic state ) than before.

Through the privilege of the Priesthood, if I am faithful to its offices and callings I will acquire dominions over the universal forces of the earth.

Blessings I can pass on to my posterity are to magnify my callings to the priesthood by keeping all the commandments of the Lord and remaining faithful to the covenants I have made with Him that I may thereby be more capable and worthy of teaching them the truth pertaining to salvation. That they may be faithful and obedient to the requirements of the Lord and grow in grace, and be an honor and comfort to me while I live upon the earth and eventually gain an exaltation in the Celestial Kingdom of God

The Prize I am seeking is to complete my mission on this earth and perfect myself through these experiences so that God the Eternal Father will say, "Well done through good and faithful servant. As thou hast been faithful over a few things. I will now make you ruler over many things". As this time will be my third estate and I will be privilege to beget spiritual children and prepare them that they may go on through the different stages or progression continually gaining knowledge and power. At a later date when sufficient spiritual children have been born into my kingdom, and they have been tried and tested, I will then say unto the Gods which are above, and below me. "See here is space let us go down and make an earth upon which these may dwell and we will prove them herewith and see if they will be faithful to our commandments".

Then I will take on the responsibility of an earth like unto this one and I will still go on progressing of which there is no end. Great and marvelous are the works of God and the privileges of man.

"My Birthright" an essay by Myrtle Mary Wear Tenney

Sometime in the 1930's or early 1940's Opal Tenney Goodman requested her mother, Myrtle Mary Wear Tenney, to write a short essay entitled "My Birthright". Here is the typed version of that original testimony which was handwritten on legal-size paper. This came about as an assignment in a Sunday School Genealogy class where the student was to get information from the parents. This was "Lesson One" assignment.

My Birth Right
[by Myrtle Mary Wear Tenney]

I am of Divine Lineage having spent my preexistence life in the presence of my Heavenly Father and Mother receiving instructions and training directly from them, partaking of their wonderful influence and of the opportunities for advancement there. I was taught that I should come to this earth and receive a body in order to progress in my second estate and go on to perfection.

I looked forward to this great event with much joy and satisfaction, had a great desire to come through a righteous lineage so that I might progress and advance in my Father's work here on earth.

Because of my faithfulness there, I was permitted to come through a righteous lineage. Through the loins of Joseph, I was reserved for six thousand years there to come forth in this dispensation when the fullness of the gospel is upon the earth and God's chosen spirits are to dwell here. I have been born of worthy parents. My heritage is one of the very greatest in all the world. I would not exchange it for one born heir to millions in worldly wealth or for one born heir to rule an empire. My birthright surpasses all these and I am very thankful and greatly blessed because of my lineage.

My life has come down from generation to generation through the patriarchs and prophets of ancient Israel. Through the noblest and most faithful of their descendants through the Dark Ages from many God-fearing men and women of honest lives. I am grateful to my progenitors for through them I have received in my veins the very best blood in the land.

Because of my birthright and my own obedience to the principles of the Gospel I am entitled to the blessings of the Holy Priesthood. This is truly a Pearl of Great Price worth more to me than any other earthly possession. Through it I can gain the righteous desires of my heart--eternal family happiness, wisdom and knowledge and ultimately eternal life to dwell with God, the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ in the Celestial Kingdom.

I am now upon my mission. My days of expectancy are over. I am being tested to see if I will do the things I have promised I would do. I have accepted the Gospel Plan. It appealed to me when I first heart it. The more I heard the more I rejoiced and now I have a burning testimony of this glorious Gospel Plan which is the dearest thing in all the world to me. I hope to pass it on to my posterity and live faithful to all the covenants I have made with my Heavenly Father. I know that he has been mindful of me and has had his watchcare over me and brought me out of a world of unbelief. My greatest desire is to increase my testimony and work faithfully wherever I am called to labor in the Lord's Vineyard, keep his commandments and all the covenants I have made with him.

I recently found a letter written by my brother, Larry Dean Goodman. It was written June 22 1958 during the time I was living with him and his wife, Myrna Joyce McFarland Goodman, in Tucson, Arizona while he and I were attending the University of Arizona. The letter was the occasion of the 72nd birthday for our grandma, Myrtle Mary Wear Tenney. I've typed the letter content for easier reading--see below.

This letter shows the spiritual maturity and insight Larry had regarding his relationship with his Grandmother, the Church and his Savior. At the time the letter was written Larry and Myrna had only one child, Scott. Shane, their second child, would be born two months later in August 1958. Larry is 21 years old and was serving as a Tucson LDS Stake Missionary.

Dearest Grandma,

I have often wondered what could be done for me to show my appreciation to you for the effect you have had on me and the influence your life has been through your words and actions for the betterment of my life.

You are not a person to cherish the material things of life, therefore, I will not attempt to show my love for you by those material things that can be bought, but with words that are written and come from my heart.

If I were asked who is the greatest woman in the world I would not hesitate a second to say "my Grandmother". And if asked why I would list or say these things: Her finest quality is patience which coincides with her wonderful humility, her love can only be exceeded by the Savior Jesus Christ, she is ever ready to help someone else who is in need of extra love and physical help. She is very wise and can give advice that is logical and helpful at all times.

I have seen her weep and laugh which proves her feelings to be of and for all things, her laughter brings out the sense of humor she so well has. After a day's work that would take two people to accomplish she can sit down and tell a story that will fascinate the listeners to a degree that they will be spellbound and never grow tired of hearing them. My favorite one that she tells is the story of the Black Bear and the Grey [Brown] Bear cousins visiting each other, which proves to me her quality of intellectual imagination and a touch of psychology which both are important in bringing up children. Her good judgment is strictly an intellectual quality with an imagination to it.

And most important of all she uses these talents she has developed in being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which requires a true follower of it to have these qualities in order to be a true Saint of the latter days. And I must honestly say that she has presented these wonderful developments to me in a such a way that I can declare her to be the most perfect person I have ever known!

Grandma, I could write all night on my love and admiration of you but time won't permit but these are the main points on what I base my feelings for you.

You have been such a strength to my testimony that I hope my children may have the privilege of knowing you and get the good out of it that I feel I have.

I just hope too that my mother, my wife, and my daughters will develop into a person such as you are. What a wonderful teacher they could be to their surroundings if they would. I know Grandma that just writing these things won't show my appreciation for you and thank you enough as will my trying to live the Gospel in its true and complete way and be able to dwell with you in the eternities forever in which I look forward to after my mission in this life.

I want you to know that Myrna and I think of you always and you're ever in our prayers. We thank God for the privilege we had for our Temple Marriage and for your presence there. Myrna loves you very much too, and we always look forward to seeing you.

I hope the Lord will bless you with many happy and healthy days to come and that you may continue to be a strength in the Testimonies of others through your words and actions.

Again I must say I love you and appreciate you very much and hope to see you soon.

[Sallie is our great-grandmother and Hubert is their son and our uncle.]

You will see that Sarah Jane Boyd Wear was called "Sallie" which was a nickname for Sarah at that time. Also note "Mary Myrtle Wear"--years later Grandma Tenney in concert with her children determined that her official name is "Myrtle Mary Wear".
I do not know when this Bible came into the possession or purchased by the Wear Family but the last date recorded was for the 1922 death of
Great-grandma Wear--Sarah Jane Boyd Wear.

1966 Texas Road Trip Yields Treasures!

In the Summer of 1966 Myrtle Mary Wear Tenney and her daughter Opal Tenney Goodman Allen went on a family history and genealogy road tip to Texas. Myrtle left Texas about the turn of the 20th Century--1900. She and her family left behind all their Wear and Boyd cousins. This was an opportunity to reconnect and find some cousins! Most of the pictures in this blog post series are from that 1966 trip.

Susan Alice Boyd is a sister to Sarah Jane Boyd and the mother of Myrtle Wear Tenney thus making Myrtle and Murray B 1st Cousins.
It's interesting to note that Sarah Jane was born in 1862 and Susan Alice in 1864 during the middle of the Civil War. Birthplace: Carthage, Leake County, Mississippi. They are true "Southerners" relocating into west Texas with their family. We have a wonderful heritage!

Wear Cousins! Around June 16, 2009 I sent out an e-mail with this picture attached. I now want to share the background regarding the acquisition of this rare photograph which was written by Opal Tenney Goodman and I quote:

"This picture came into the possession of Opal Tenney Goodman Allen in the following manner:

In June of 1989 I received a letter from Annie Hanson Harden [1906-1993] who is the daughter of Annie Boyd Hansen [1975-1955] and Labe [Laburn] Hanson [1872-1936]. Annie Hanson Harden and Myrtle Mary Wear Tenney are 1st Cousins.

She said she was 86 years old and had received a heart surgery and was not doing well. She was trying to give her personal belongings away. Among her things she found 5 pictures of her Boyd families that were very old. She tried to decide which one of her children would appreciate receiving them. She felt that none of them would really care about the pictures.

One morning she suddenly had the name of Opal Allen [her 1st Cousin-once-removed] come into her mind and felt that was who she should give them to.

In 1961 I had called her and talked about family history and then written her a letter.

She decided to write me a letter and she included my letter which I had written to her in 1961, hoping to refresh my memory of who she was. i remembered very well. She asked if I would be interested in the pictures, after giving me the above information. Of course I was very excited about it and wrote right back to her, sending her $2.00 to help with the postage.

She sent the pictures and returned my $2.00. She had written on the back of the pictures information of the people in the pictures, except one and she said she surely hoped I would know who that family was.

Imagine my thrill when it was my Grandpa and Grandma William Green Wear and Sara Jane Boyd Wear and all of their children except James Williamson (sic) Wear, the oldest son, who left home at the age of 16 and was not included in the picture". End of quote.

August 19 2009 Update--while touring the Wear/Tenney Ranch March 2008 we learned that James William Wear had been referred to as "James, William's son", and that some individuals ended up giving him that name by mistake. Thus some have him as James Williamson Wear. But Mike Wear who currently (2009) lives on the original Wear Ranch in Sunset, Arizona says his name should be James William Wear.

James William Wear, "Uncle Jim", never married. He was out of touch from the family for many years and then returned and spent his last years in Prescott where he died in 1970.

This book of Scriptures belonged to William Green Wear. He was baptized into
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
in August 1920 by his son-in-law Nathan Orson Tenney.

Around that time he became the owner of this Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price which was published in 1913. The book measures 2 3/4 inches by 4 1/4 inches. It contains the "Lectures on Faith"--a rare book indeed!

William Green Wear died May 10, 1927. The following Christmas William Green Wear's daughter-in-law, Bessie Simpson Wear, gave this book to his grandson, Darrel William Barrett, who at the time was 14 years old. Darrel kept this book until his untimely death about three years later. It is interesting that this scripture was published the year of Derral's birth.

Kate Wear Barrett is the oldest child in the original Wear familiy. She is about 7 years older than Myrtle Wear Tenney. Kate and her husband George William Barrett, Jr. had four children. Two boys and two girls. Both boys died early leaving only the two girls to marry. George died 29 March, 1915, about seven months before the last child, Jane, was born. Sometimes we forget the trials and tribulations we are to experience in this mortal life. Kate is a hero in her own place in life.

Her son Darrell Barrett was killed by an accident with his horse on the Wear Ranch, March 30, 1931. He would turn 18 years old the following October. He is buried in the Wear family Mt. View Cemetery near the Wear family ranch house.

In the winters of 1935 and 1936 the Will & Annie Moyes Goodman Family from Murtaugh, Idaho came to Prescott, Arizona to spend part of the winter. They would have come for the winter of 1937 but Grandpa William (Will) Nathaniel Goodman died that December.

and left for their mission

to serve in the Western States Mission
with headquarters in Denver, Colorado.
Most of their work was done the San Luis Valley of south central Colorado.

Aunt Edith had been the Mountain Bell Telephone Company operator for Murtaugh, Idaho. She was replaced in that position by Pearl Tenney. Edith Bates had several relatives and children in the Murtaugh Ward where Everett and Opal Tenney Goodman lived. When Nathan came to Idaho to visit his daughter he met Edith and developed a relationship.

[I remember this being rather exciting news for me as a little kid because one of my favorite classmates in church and school was Bruce Bates and to learn that his Grandma Bates was marrying my Grandpa Tenney was creating quite a stir in that little farming community! I just remember what a gracious lady she was and how nice "Aunt Edith" treated me. Bill Goodman]

"...They opened up most of that [San Luis] area. It is a point of particular interest to me, because in the 1930's my dad (Boyd Tenney) opened up the Spanish speaking work in that area when he was the District Leader serving in Taos, New Mexico. Then Grandpa [Nathan and Edith] served there in the 1940's (English speaking) and then Spencer and I served there in 2006 speaking both Spanish and English. Bet no one can top that story for family and mission continuity!

Opal Tenney at age 18 lived with them for several weeks in the summer of 1931 and took this picture.
On one occasion her Grandpa Tenney thought she should not be "stepping out" every night with the boys. She was extremely socially active! He was concerned about her health and sleep. So she writes that she obeyed her Grandpa and stayed in for a couple of days!

Grandpa Tenney was probably also concerned about his own daughter, Emma Belle, who was following Opal around Chandler, Gilbert and Mesa and the social outings!

They went to church and Mutual, visited the Lamoreaux cousins, swam in the canals, danced at the Mezona and went to shows at the one and only movie theater in Mesa, the Nile.

Circa 1952

Emma Belle's mother (Mary Norfleet Tenney) died 15 May 1953. This may be one of the last photographs we have of our other Great-Grandma Tenney, "Auntie". Her husband, Samual Benjamin Tenney, Sr. had died earlier on 23 May 1949. Missing in this picture is the oldest child, Don, who was born in June 1936 and the Dad, Pete Larsen.

I remember Pete and Emma Belle Tenney Larson and their children coming to Idaho and visiting us one summer in the early 1950's. My mother and Emma Belle were the dearest of friends (niece and aunt-actually).

Opal Tenney wrote a daily diary from June 3 through September 9, 1931. She took her camera with her! She was 18 years old and spent part of her summer vacation with her half-Aunt (Emma Belle) and half-Uncle (Ammon) who are twins. They are the youngest children of Samuel Benjamin Tenney, Sr. and his wife, Mary Norfleet Tenney.

The twins were born in July 1912. Opal was born in March 1913. They were close in age and spent time together as dear friends.. They were never considered "half anything". I bring this up so the younger generation will know that Nathan Orson Tenney (Opal's father) came through Lora Isabelle "Belle" Brown, first wife of S. B. Tenney, Sr.. And yes, my Great-Grandpa Tenney was 54 years old when the twins were born!

While Opal was in "the valley" she stayed with her "Grandpa Tenney" and "Auntie" Mary Tenney and their children in their home.

Ammon and Emma Belle are 19 years old in all these photographs. Later Aunt Emma Belle Tenney married Peter Fielding Larsen and Uncle Ammon Norfleet Tenney married Sylvia Carling Cluff.

Pearl was the telephone operator for Murtaugh, Idaho. She took over that position from Edith Lee Bates who would later marry Grandpa Nathan Orson Tenney. I remember making phone calls by cranking the box to create a ring. The operator would come on and say, "Number Please" and then I could talk to Aunt Pearl! I remember going into the telephone office and watching the switch board light up and the plugs and wires being moved around. We're so glad that Aunt Pearl spent some time with us in Murtaugh!

Everett & Opal Tenney Goodman had the grocery store in the background that faced Murtaugh's main street. The home was entered either through the back of the store or by driving or walking around to the back of the home. All the photographs were taken in the back yard of the home. Later we would move to our farm and home by Murtaugh Lake.

Eudora had come to Idaho to attend Albion Normal College for a teaching degree and would often travel the 50 miles to visit her sister, Opal Tenney Goodman and family.

In the backyard of Everett and Opal Tenney Goodman's downtown grocery store home.
Pearl Tenney's family wished her to go to college in Idaho with Eudora. That did not fly! So Pearl came to Murtaugh and became the Mountain Bell Telephone Operator. This was the old fashion system of "Number Please". The telephone office was located across the street and down a few yards from our store and residence so it was easy to go visit Aunt Pearl. More will be said about this in Pearl's upcoming family blog. ---but that's why Aunt Pearl is in many of the Murtaugh pictures!

Aunt Nina served as the Mission Secretary to President Bryant S. Hinckley, the father to President Gordan B. Hinckley.

This looks like all the extras from the movie "The Untouchables"-- missing is Al Capone!

(When we lived in the Chicago area (1991-2002) I got to visit the Chicago Board of Trade. It's still an amazing place!)

Sister Tenney writes on the back of the photo but all the edges have been cut off: "...attended the Conference. ...In front of Logan Square Chapel. Sr Kohler is on side...Sr Meeks on other ...of me."

When Jeannie and I and our younger children were living in the Chicago area (1991-2002) I visited the Logan Square Chapel as part of my work with seminary. In the 1930's it was a classy, upscale residential area!

Susy Parry Eames says Nina and Dick were released the same day from their mission in Chicago.

Susy says she started Second Grade after they moved to Hawaii in 1948.

On July 29, 2009 I received an e-mail from my 2nd Cousin, John Crawford, son of J L Crawford. We had mistakenly identified the cousin with Boyd as Elmer Crawford. This is what John writes: "Boyd Tenney and my Dad [J L Crawford] were like brothers. Boyd gave a profound and sincere eulogy at my dad's funeral and later spent several hours talking to me about how he and my Dad had been so close I knew this, as my Dad told me many stories of their connection, including how Boyd would ride horseback from the Tenney Ranch, across town to the Willow Creek ranch where Dad lived. The next time, Dad would return the favor and ride horseback to see Boyd. As I recall they were both born in 1915 with Dad being several months younger [Boyd June 22 and J L November 10].

This is one of my favorite photographs! I believe Aunt Rachel's legacy and impact upon her children and grandchildren will continue to expand. She was an amazing individual and mother in Zion. Uncle Boyd was able to accomplish much that he did because he had Rachel supporting and loving him to the end of her days.
